Quilchena Point Rv Resort on Nicola Lake was a last minute change to our itinerary. With major construction along Hwy 1 we decided to take Hwy 5 and so had to find a campground along that route. What a great find ! and what an interesting history. The campground is very small, has full hookups, large fenced dog run, one of the cleanest laundry / washroom I have seen, a host on site, and a great walking trail to a picnic and boat launch area that is perfect for off leash fun. The one con; the sparseness of tree canopy = no shade, but that is to be expected in the high plateau areas of BC. Thankfully the lake has a constant breeze. Across from the campground is Sagebrush golf resort which has rolling hills and looks like it would be a fun course to play.
Nicola Lake is a glacially formed narrow, deep lake and is a widening of the Nicola River system – it is 22 km in length. It is home for the Upper Nicola Indian Band, many of whom work for the Douglas Lake Cattle Company whose headquarters are adjacent to the lake. Douglas Lake CC is Canada’s largest working cattle ranch – founded in 1886. The Nicola Valley is narrow and mountainous, generating substantial winds that have given the lake a good reputation among sailors and windsurfers. We saw several very talented windsurfers while we were there. The lake is also a popular location for fishing and the Kamloops Sailing Association operates a facility at Quilchena that was originally constructed for the 1993 Canada Games sailing events.
