Nebraska

From the middle of Iowa we passed through a corner of Nebraska and then crossed the Missouri River into South Dakota at Yankton (another city which sits in two states) in one day. We planned to camp at a rec. area operated by the Army Core of Engineers (ACE) as they have a reputation for really well kept and clean campgrounds. We drove into the White Crane Rec. site and were directed by a host to go check out site close by which would be quieter. As we started to drive that way, we looked across the river at the Nebraska side and saw another area also operated by ACE. So we drove over the dam, registered online, and set up camp. We realized once at the Nebraska rec. site, that SD charges a lot of extra fees compared to NE and we saved about $50 CAN. Only down side was no trails from the camp. We booked two nights for a little break from driving and as promised, the bathrooms were very clean.

We drove to a trailhead a few miles away the next morning. At the South Shore recreation area (which are multi use trails) is a network of trails. We hiked through scrub, forest, and along high bluffs near the river where the wind was fierce and made the Missouri River look like an ocean.

On the way back we stopped at the ACE visitor centre where I bought a book detailing all their campgrounds. Well worth the $20 as the web site they have is not the easiest to navigate and I love their camps.
