The Minnesota / Wisconsin state line is a weird one. It follows the winding St. Croix River and so the state of Wisconsin is not the usual rectangle and even extends into Lake Superior.
Once again we change time zones shortly into Wisconsin and are now on Eastern Standard time.
A Harvest Host in Iron River is our destination. It is a privately owned and run active airport. Upon arrival there is a well posted sign welcoming us. The directions on the web app are very well explained and we head to our parking area. To our delight there are new picnic tables, fire pits, and clearly defined spots for quite a few guests. What a great find. We saw a plane take off, then return shortly after – testing out some repairs perhaps as it was in the maintenance hangar when we arrived. There is one guest already parked and as we settle in for the night, two others join.
We are now for a brief time and the last time this trip, back on Route 2. We are heading to a state park in Michigan. Wisconsin, though has so far impressed with nice roads and The BEST visitor centre, the Northern Great Lakes Visitor center in Ashland. We stopped to stretch our legs and discovered a museum, discovery center with a 360 view deck, gorgeous wildflower fields with trails, ponds, etc….. and most important – immaculate washrooms. Shortly after we crossed the Michigan state line.
