With Kim being gone for 4 weeks, I quickly needed to pick up the slack as Kim had being doing an awesome job with training and ensuring Cedar had a diversified raw diet. I also soon learnt that it was going to be quite a challenge to entertain an enthusiastic young puppy who has a tendency for continual biting and chewing. It also meant I had to cancel many of my activities as he is still too young to be left for a longer period of time. So its just me and the puppy all day.
With Cedar recovering from the surgery, this slowed us down for a few days but we now have a pretty decent daily routine. My first task was to work on his recall. I took Cedar to a nearby field and with the aid of a 50 foot training lead, we practiced his ability to come to me immediately when called. It turns out, being so food motivated, that he had zero hesitation to come on command.
The next step was to go to some local off leash trails, initially when no one was around, and let him off his leash for short periods. He is very attentive to staying close and just loves the freedom he has gained. We have multiple off leash trails close by that offer various distances and scenery which we now frequent each day and we’ve been able to socialize with many different dogs. Our favourite hike is Notch Hill which we have yet to do off leash. Hopefully soon!
