Page, Arizona/Utah

This town in Arizona sits along the border of the two states and is a very popular destination for boaters on the large Lake Powell reservoir. A man-made lake formed when the Glen Canyon Dam was built. The dam traps the flow of water from 3 rivers and flooded the Glen Canyon creating a lake 186 miles long (300 KM) and 25 miles wide (40 KM) at the maximum width. It has many tributaries making it an interesting place to explore.

We stayed at the Lone Rock Beach Campground ($14 per night as we had the America the Beautiful pass) a primitive camping area on the dunes of the western most point of Lake Powell. There are no designated sites – just pull up and find a space. We parked a little furthur away from the beach for privacy but still had great views of the lake with beautiful sunset and sunrise scenes. Luckily we had researched ahead and knew which area to park – where the sand was hard packed – we watched several vehicles get stuck in soft sand during our visit. It was quiet while we were there for 2 nights, but it would be incredibly crowded and busy in warmer months. The town of Page has boatyards filled with houseboats waiting to get out on the water.

This area is well know also for Slot Canyons. There are many tour companies offering trips into these interesting canyons.
