White Sands National Monument

The web site says “Like no place else on earth” and I believe it! The worlds largest Gypsum dunes – 275 square miles of white desert. There is a scenic drive through the dunefield, with trails, a couple picnic areas and dunes where visitors can toboggan. There is also primitive camping in the dunes for those brave souls willing to sleep among the drifting dunes and nocturnal desert creatures. Driving and walking along we were reminded of ski hills and driving on icy roads in a surreal way.

Looks like an ice covered road

The trails are well marked with posters from which we learned all about the unique plants, animals and creatures living in a very harsh climate – some have adapted by becoming bleached versions of their cousins. The longest trail leads to the center of the dunefield and is a loop that takes about 4 hours to hike – at the trailhead is a sign indicating how much water you would need to bring for this hike where summer temperatures can be brutally hot. I think sunglasses would be just as important in a field of white.
