City of Rocks State Park

We had tried to book a site here instead of the ranch, unfortunately they were full up (or so we thought). On a day trip to this park we realized that only the electric sites were booked online, but the dry camping sites do not need booking ahead. Darn!! Noted for our next trip out. The park encompasses a one square mile area in the Chihuahuan desert region. A small area but gorgeous. The “city” is a geologic formation made up of large, sculptured rock columns (pinnacles), with paths between like city streets. The rocks were formed about 34.9 million years ago and erosion over time has formed the sculptured columns seen today, creating an otherworldly landscape.

The campsites are in among these rocks making for a unique camping experience. There are a few hiking trails from the park – a small cacti garden, an observatory, and a large modern comfort station.

Nearby are 2 other state parks: Pancho Villa which is a park with exhibits in remembrance of the Mexican Revolution raid on the town of Columbus by Pancho Villa. Rockhound State Park is so-named because it is a popular area for rock enthusiasts – visitors can take rocks from the park and there are many varieties of minerals to choose from.
