Morro Strand State Beach, California

A short one hour drive to the ocean.  From Paso Robles we drive across a short mountain pass that separates the valley from the ocean.  Once down the other side we are immediately back at the ocean, with hills, dunes and farms.  Morro Strand State Beach is a small oceanside campground.  We will spend a week here.  Easy entry and parking – the set up is well done with cement pads for the RV and tow vehicle parking beside the trailer instead of in front which allows for ocean views.   Behind us is a small hill for privacy and then a quiet residential street.  We can hear the surf from our site.

Miko is much happier now!  The park is not busy, so we can leave her to roam on her own and she soon gets comfortable and finds a patch of new green grass to nibble.

Across from our site is a path to the beach where we go for a nice walk and see surfers, sand dollar shells all along the beach and quite a few species of shore birds.

As well we spied two tall ships sailing off Morro Bay.   Chris remembered reading about  a couple tall ships in the area for a special event.  We looked them up – The Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain are in town for a Christmas event which includes a Christmas light show and “Sails Battle”.  What fun!

Morro Bay is very bike friendly, there are wide designated bike lanes on the roadways, bike paths and beach biking, so we bike into town.  There is a really cute area near the marina with shops selling local art, gifts, and seafood as well as a good variety of restaurants and inns.

At the mouth of the bay is Morro Rock – a 23 million year old volcanic rock which is home to Peregrine Falcons, a protected species, and therefore it illegal to climb Morro Rock, but visitors can visit at the base.  The harbour is well protected by a natural sand spit between ocean and marina and we see quite a few paddle board surfers in the harbour.  We discover a great little fresh seafood store stocking fresh dungeness crab which is in season. There’s Dinner….  They prepare the pieces for us and put them on ice in a bag along with a baguette.  The store has all the fixings to make a meal – seafood, spices, sides, wines, etc.   and good prices.

Below us, in the water as we leave the store, is a little harbour seal.  All alone, lying beneath a water spout, on the rocks…… It has found a perfect spot all to itself, and what a ham.
