On our way to Winnipeg from Blue Lake we pass through Lake of the Woods district, a beautiful part of Ontario near the Manitoba border. The terrain begins to flatten out and as we enter Manitoba the Trans Canada hwy becomes Hwy #1 and is 4 lanes into Winnipeg. The road is in rough shape all the way into the city.
There is a perimeter Hwy. around the city which we are able to take to get to my brother Frank’s house in the Linden Woods neighborhood. We park the trailer in his driveway and catch up on years of famiy news.
Afterwards we head to dinner at The Canadian Brewhouse, a nearby sports bar, and enjoy a meal and birthday celebration for Lynn’s (sister in law) dad. Great venue, and good food.
Next day, a visit to the Canadian Human Rights Museum with our neice Abigail. The museum is downtown Winnipeg in the historical Forks district, so named for where the two rivers The Asiniboine and Red River meet. The museum is renowned for its architecture as much as the content and it does not dissapoint. The building is a mix of glass, steel, and concrete and is stunning to see at first glance. We overheard a tour guide explain that the structure itself is designed to depict parts of Canada such as the prairies, mountains, northern lights, icebergs, etc. and part of the glass panels fold over each other to represent the represent the wings of doves. Our visit begins with a great temporary exhibit of Nelson Mandela’s life. From there we go up to the other 7 floors where the permanent exhibit’s are. Moving from floor to floor is via a series of walkways which climb upwards through the glass and concrete structure and providing areas of light, shadow, and dark but always providing glimpes of exhibits above and below. We take the elevator up the central tower and get a great view of the city from all angles.
After the museum, a very quick walk takes us to The Forks heritage site. Inside the main building is a food court with tons of choices and on the second flood a series of shops. Outisde is a park and walking path along the rivers.
Back home and a relaxing dinner then off to bed. We are getting an early start in the morning.
