We leave Pancake Bay on a gloomy rainy Tuesday morning heading for our next destination. Lake Superior, when I look at her vastness reminds me of the oceans with the sand dunes, waves, and endless horizon. We stayed at Pancake Bay with the girls about 12 years ago and fell in love with it then. Our next leg takes us all along the largest of the great lakes from one end to the other.
We hitch up in a light rain and start our drive toward Thunder Bay where the trans Canada highway goes along the lake then up into the mountains above, twisting and climbing and descending constantly and with non-stop truck traffic. Its a two lane highway mostly with passing lanes here and there. The rain does not stop which makes the drive tiring and not much fun, and at some points kind of nerve wracking when impatient truck drivers push you to get out of their way. And to make it even more fun, Miko is also not enjoying the ride. She doesn’t seem to like the ups and downs any more than we do. Hopefully she will get used to this lifestyle…. We stopped for lunch at a pretty little town caleed Terrace Bay, 300 metre above the lake, and at the visitor centre we were told that on a clear day you can see for miles, but really only 14 miles because of the horizon. A good trivia question? We also found out that their bay is popular for ships to take shelter in storms as it is on route to or from The Sault. Continuing on our way we pass up on two provincial campgrounds that looked good, Rainbow Falls and Sleeping Giant, because the weather sucks. We decide to just head to Thunder Bay and stay overnight at a KOA nearby – our first stay at one actually turns out to be a good choice after a long 8 hours drive. The site is a very easy pull-through with full hook ups so we can relax and have everything we need right there. A treat that doesn’t come cheap but once in a while it will be nice.
